A branded page of links is a manageable first project. It also makes a good test of a question we’ll keep asking: can you build the bit you actually need?

Define the job

Someone clicks your profile link. What do you want them to do next?

Choose a small number of useful actions: view your work, book a call, browse your products or contact you. Don’t turn the page into a list of every account you have ever opened.

Plan the page

Start with a name, a short sentence explaining what you do and three to five labelled links.

“See my latest work” tells a visitor more than “Click here”. Put the most useful action first.

Use a readable font, enough space between links and colours with clear contrast. Test the page on a phone.

A starting brief

Build a simple branded links page for [business/person]. It needs a name, a short introduction and [number] clearly labelled links. The main action is [action]. Make it readable on mobile, usable with a keyboard and clear at larger text sizes. Use these colours: [colours]. Do not add sign-in or a database unless we need them.

For a page you rarely change, you might not need stored link records at all. If you need to manage links through an admin screen, plan that separately.

Check what you’re replacing

A links page does not automatically replace another tool’s analytics, commerce features, scheduling or support. If you depend on those, include them in the comparison.

Compare the costs of your actual plans and domains, rather than assuming the replacement is free.

Try it

Open every link. Check that the destination is correct, buttons are easy to tap, text can be enlarged and focus is visible when using the keyboard.

Ask someone who doesn’t know your business what they think they should click. If they can answer quickly, the page is doing its job.
